Privacy policy

What we collect, why we collect it, who we give it to, and the rights you have over it under the Privacy Act 2020.

Who this policy applies to

This policy applies to Best Life Insurance (bestlifeinsurance.co.nz) and to any personal information we collect through this website, by email or by phone. It is written to meet the Information Privacy Principles in the Privacy Act 2020.

We are a referral service. We are not an insurer and not a financial advice provider. Once we pass your enquiry to Marble Life, that firm becomes an agency in its own right under the Privacy Act and handles your information under its own privacy policy. Ask them for it — you are entitled to see it.

What we collect

Only what you give us, plus a small amount of technical information your browser sends automatically. The enquiry forms on this site collect:

  • Your first name and last name.
  • Your email address.
  • Your phone number.
  • An age band — a range such as “40 – 49”, not your date of birth.
  • Your region in New Zealand.
  • Your smoking status, where the form asks for it, as a broad category such as non-smoker, smoker or vaper, or recently quit.
  • What kind of cover you are interested in — life, trauma, TPD, income protection, mortgage repayment, funeral, health, business cover, or a review of what you already hold.
  • What prompted the enquiry, where the form asks — a new mortgage, a new baby, a premium increase, and so on.
  • Whether you already hold cover, and with whom, if you choose to tell us.
  • Anything you type into the free-text notes field.
  • The page of this site you submitted the form from, and which version of the form you used.

We do not collect medical information through this website

None of our forms ask for health information, medical history, medications, test results, disability information or anything else that would be health information under the Privacy Act and the Health Information Privacy Code. We deliberately do not want it here.

Please do not put medical detail into the free-text notes field. If you do, we will pass it on with the rest of the enquiry, because it is part of what you sent us — but a web form is the wrong place for it. Health information belongs in the conversation with the adviser, and later in the insurer’s application, where it is handled under processes built for it.

Information collected automatically

Our hosting and analytics record ordinary technical data — IP address, browser and device type, the pages requested, referring page, and the date and time. This is used to keep the site working and to understand which pages people find useful. We do not use it to try to identify you personally.

Why we collect it, and what we do with it

We collect personal information for one purpose: to connect you with a licensed New Zealand adviser who can give you financial advice about insurance, and to respond to you if you contact us directly.

  • Contact details, so an adviser can reach you and so we can answer an email or a call.
  • Age band, region, smoking status and cover interest, so the adviser arrives at the first conversation with some idea of what you are asking about rather than starting from nothing.
  • Existing cover and your notes, so the adviser can prepare and does not waste your time re-asking what you have already told us.
  • Source page and form version, so we can see which of our pages lead to enquiries and improve the ones that do not.

Providing the information is voluntary. If you do not want to give it, do not use the form — read the site, or call us. If you leave out an email address or a phone number the form will not submit, because an adviser cannot come back to you without one.

We do not use your information to make automated decisions about you, and we do not profile you for advertising.

Who we disclose it to

When you submit an enquiry form, we disclose the information in it to Marble Life, a New Zealand adviser firm, for the purpose of providing you with financial advice about insurance. That is the point of the form and it is the reason we collect anything at all.

We also use ordinary service providers to run the site — hosting, the secure connector that transmits enquiries to the adviser firm, email, and website analytics. They handle information on our instructions and for no purpose of their own.

We do not sell your data

We do not sell, rent, trade or auction personal information to third parties. Your enquiry goes to one adviser firm. It is not distributed to a panel of insurers, it is not sold as a lead to multiple buyers, and it is not passed to marketing companies. If you have used comparison sites before and been called by five different people, that is what we are deliberately not doing.

We will otherwise only disclose personal information where you have authorised it, where disclosure is required or permitted by law, or where it is necessary to prevent or lessen a serious threat to someone’s life, health or safety.

If the adviser firm is outside New Zealand, or a service provider stores information offshore, we take reasonable steps to ensure comparable safeguards apply as required by the Privacy Act 2020. Marble Life is a New Zealand firm.

How long we keep it

We keep enquiry information only for as long as we need it for the purpose we collected it — passing the enquiry on, confirming it arrived, answering follow-up questions, and keeping the business records we are required to keep.

  • Enquiry records are retained for a limited period so we can resolve any question about whether an enquiry was received and passed on correctly, and to meet record-keeping obligations.
  • Email correspondence is kept for as long as the matter is live, and then archived or deleted.
  • Analytics data is aggregated and retained in a form that does not identify you.
  • Once information is no longer needed for a lawful purpose, we securely delete or de-identify it.

The adviser firm keeps its own records for its own regulatory purposes, and those obligations are longer than ours. Ask them how long they keep client files.

You can ask us to delete what we hold about you at any time by emailing hello@cover4you.co.nz. We will do it unless we are required to keep it.

How we keep it safe

We take reasonable steps to protect personal information from loss, unauthorised access, use, modification and disclosure, as required by the Privacy Act 2020.

  • This site is served over an encrypted connection, and form submissions are transmitted encrypted.
  • Enquiries are transmitted to the adviser firm through an authenticated, signed connection rather than by plain email.
  • Access to enquiry data is limited to the people who need it to do their job.
  • We do not store credit card or bank account details. We never ask for payment on this site.

No system is perfectly secure, and we will not claim otherwise. If a privacy breach occurs that is likely to cause serious harm, we will notify the affected people and the Office of the Privacy Commissioner as the Privacy Act 2020 requires.

Cookies and analytics

This site uses a small number of cookies and similar technologies. Some are necessary to make pages work and to keep a form submission secure. Others are analytics cookies that tell us how many people visited a page, how they got there, and where they left.

Analytics are used in aggregate. We look at whether a guide is being read, not at what any individual did. We do not use analytics to build advertising profiles of readers.

You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. Blocking analytics cookies will not stop you reading anything here. Blocking all cookies may stop a form from submitting.

Where this site links out to a third party — an insurer, a regulator, a source we have cited — that site sets its own cookies under its own privacy policy. We have no control over them.

Your rights under the Privacy Act 2020

You have two rights we take seriously, and they cost you nothing to use.

The right of access

You can ask us to confirm whether we hold personal information about you, and to give you access to it. Email hello@cover4you.co.nz with the words “privacy request” in the subject line and tell us enough for us to find your record — normally the name, email address and phone number you used. We may ask you to verify your identity before we release anything, because releasing your information to somebody else would be the worse mistake.

We will respond as soon as reasonably practicable and in any case within 20 working days of receiving the request, as the Act requires. There is normally no charge. If a rare exception in the Act means we have to withhold something, we will tell you which one and why.

The right of correction

If information we hold about you is wrong, you can ask us to correct it. Email the same address and tell us what is wrong and what it should say. If for some reason we do not make the correction, you can ask us to attach a statement of the correction you sought, and we will attach it to the record.

Withdrawing an enquiry

You can tell us at any time that you no longer want to be contacted, and you can tell the adviser firm the same thing directly. If you want the adviser firm to delete what it holds, ask them — that record is theirs, not ours, and we cannot delete it on your behalf.

If you think we have got it wrong

Tell us first. Email hello@cover4you.co.nz setting out what happened and what you would like done about it. We will acknowledge it, look into it and come back to you with an answer.

If you are not satisfied with our response, or you would rather not deal with us at all, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner. The Commissioner investigates privacy complaints independently, and it costs you nothing.

  • Office of the Privacy Commissioner — privacy.org.nz
  • Enquiries: 0800 803 909
  • Email: enquiries@privacy.org.nz
  • Post: PO Box 10094, Wellington 6143

If your complaint is about how Marble Life or an insurer has handled your information, raise it with that firm first. They have their own complaints process and their own dispute resolution scheme, and the Privacy Commissioner remains available to you either way.

Changes to this policy

We update this policy when what we do changes, or when the law does. The current version is always the one on this page, and the date it was last updated is shown at the top. If we make a change that materially affects how we handle information already collected, we will take reasonable steps to tell the people affected.

Questions about anything on this page can go to hello@cover4you.co.nz or 0800 468 376.
